I think one of the things that kept me from changing my diet over the years was my belief that it would be really hard to do. With all the information out there, I wasn’t even sure what I should actually eat!
So many diets, so many studies in the news, so many experts saying one thing is good, and then the next thing you know another expert is saying the opposite. A classic example is how we were all told to eat “low fat,” only to be told now to eat “healthy fats.” It’s no wonder Americans are confused…
I knew for years I needed to improve my diet, but quite frankly, nearly everyone else I knew ate the same way. I couldn’t imagine it could be that bad for me if that was the case.
I actually liked fruits, veggies, and fish, but my cooking skills and interest were lacking. So was the time and energy I had. I consumed a lot of not-so-healthy take out (Hello carside to go!), fast food lunches (Doesn’t the chili count as ‘healthy?’), frozen dinners, prepared foods, pastas, cereals, cookies (I loved me some double stuff oreos), and ice cream. Ok, I still love ice cream…
I remember when my good friend, Leslie, cracked up on the phone with me when I told her I was cooking, and then I shared it was a frozen Italian dinner I just bought on the way home from work. She actually said, “that’s not cooking.” I truly believed it was. I had food in a pan on my stove- that was cooking to me. Anything that required me to wash a pot or pan automatically counted.
Suffice it to say, the “standard American Diet” caught up to me. I often wondered why it caught up to me so significantly, when other people appear to be fine eating the same diet their whole life.
The truth is, however, that many of us aren’t doing well. And many of the rest of us are on the brink of getting sick. Per the CDC, half of us have one or more chronic health conditions. That is insane.
A swift kick in my ass from an autoimmune disease 15 years ago caused me to rethink everything. A couple more kicks from other autoimmune diseases drove the point home.
(Apparently I like a challenge.)
I started making changes in my diet, lifestyle, where I worked and lived, my career path, relationships, and my vision going forward. I got my masters degree in community health, studied nutrition and life coaching, and was inspired to share all that I’ve learned with others who are trying to get healthier.
I’ve come to realize that eating healthy is actually not that hard to do. It’s deciding that you are worth it and you are going to do it that’s the hard part.
Dealing with the chronic illnesses that come from a poor diet is hard.
Taking care of yourself and eating well? Not so bad.
When you finally decide to eat healthy and start consuming mostly whole foods, it really isn’t that challenging. When you eat real food, you don’t have to read boxes and nutrition labels. It makes it easier.
Your taste buds will begin to change, and you’ll start craving your new way of eating.
The trick is educating yourself on new ways to cook, and how to make it as convenient as possible. Finding people who you can bounce ideas off of, and get encouragement from. How to manage stress so it doesn’t overwhelm you and zap your energy.
These are all things you’re quite capable of learning and doing, once you decide you want to take better care of yourself.
